How to become a Certified Residential Appraiser
The Iowa Association of REALTORS® offers complete residential appraisal education from qualifying education to continuing education. And if you're looking to take your qualifying education to become a certified appraiser, you receive a discount for purchasing an entire module.
House - Become a certified residential appraiser
Step 1: Meet Basic Requirements


Hold an associates degree or higher
in any field of study

- OR -

In lieu of the required degree, twenty-one (21) semester credit hours covering all of the following subject matter courses:

  • English Composition
  • Principles of Economics (Micro or Macro)
  • Finance
  • Algebra, Geometry or higher mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Introduction to Computers: Word Processing/Spreadsheets
  • Business or Real Estate Law
 
Step 2: Complete 200 Hours of Qualifying Education


The material covered in the classroom will be tested at the end of each class.

The Iowa Association of REALTORS® offers the Qualifying Education to become a Certified Appraiser in 3 modules and offers a discount when purchased in a module.

All courses are at least 15 hours in length and tested, including USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice).

Step 3: Gain 2,500 Hours of Work Experience in no less than 24 Months

Acceptable appraisal experience includes but is not limited to:
  • Fee and staff appraisal
  • Ad valorem tax appraisal
  • Review appraisal
  • Appraisal analysis
  • Real estate counseling
  • Highest and best use analysis
  • Feasibility analysis/study and teaching of appraisal courses

Appraisal experience claimed must have been performed in compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Iowa requires all trainees and supervisors to register with the state board. Supervisors must have at least two years of certified experience and be in good standing. Supervisors are limited to no more than three trainees.

 
Step 4: Apply to sit for the Certified Residential Property Appraiser Exam


The application for the Certified Residential Property Appraiser Exam is available from the Iowa Appraisal Board.

Step 5: Successfully complete the state Residential Appraiser Exam

Step 6: Successfully complete a work product review
