COVID-19 Legal Panel for Brokers

IAR is excited to host a free COVID-19 Legal Panel for Brokers to discuss the law and how the pandemic impacts real estate.  IAR Legal Counsel, Gabe Walsh, will moderate a panel of highly regarded attorneys in Iowa.  Brokers, we are asking for your questions in advance in order for our speakers to provide the best response.

Jorge Gomez, Jr.

Attorney - Gomez May Law Firm

Jorge Gomez, Jr. received his J.D. from the University of Iowa in 1975. He has long been a partner at the Gomez May Law Firm, which has offices in both Iowa and Illinois. He is also the founder of Gomez Title and Closing Company, and has also founded abstracting services. His practice focuses on real estate in both Iowa and Illinois. Jorge is well known amongst Iowa REALTORS®, as he also serves as an IAR instructor. He shares his wealth of knowledge by teaching REALTORS® topics such as contracts, agency, and law update. He also teaches continuing legal education for lawyers. He has been involved in more than 30,000 closings in his career. Jorge is a member of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, the Scott County Bar Association, and Illinois Bar Association.

 

William B. Serangeli

 Attorney - Dickinson Law

William Serangeli received his J.D. from Drake University Law School, where he graduated with Honors and is admitted to practice law in Iowa Courts, the U.S.District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, the U.S. Tax court, and the U.S. Supreme Court.  He has been selected for inclusion in the 2013-2020 editions of the Best Lawyers in America in the areas of commercial litigation, land use & zoning litigation, real estate litigation, and real estate law. He is the 2019 “Lawyer of the Year” for Litigation – Real Estate Law as recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Lawyers in America.  He has authored several valuable articles on real estate topics, including Buyers’ Beware: The Doctrine of Merger and Non-Mandatory Disclosures, as well as Is Earnest Money Really Important?, which can both be read in the Iowa Real Estate & Land Use Blog. 

Jodie Clark McDougal

Attorney - Davis Brown Law Firm

 Jodie Clark McDougal received her J.D. from the University of Arizona College Of Law, graduating cum laude. She is a shareholder at the Davis Brown Law Firm, and is a member of the Construction, Real Estate, Litigation, and Insurance Defense Departments. She serves as the Chair of the Construction Department. Her practice includes construction law and litigation, landlord-tenant law, homeowner’s association matters, mechanic’s liens, real estate litigation, real estate transactions, construction litigation, among others.  She received the Great Plains Super Lawyers Rising Star Award for Construction litigation in 2013-2019. She was named The Best Lawyers in America for Construction Law in 2016-2020.  She has written many articles, including, The Law RE: Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals, as well as Dealing with Abandoned Mobile Homes, among others. 

Gabriel J. Walsh

Attorney – Iowa Association of REALTORS®

Gabe Walsh serves as the Legal Counsel for the Iowa Association of REALTORS®, and is also a certified Professional Standards Administrator for the association. He received his J.D. from Drake University Law School.  His job includes answering member inquiries on the IAR Legal Hotline, providing legal resources to members, teaching class for the association on legal topics, traveling to local Boards of REALTORS® across the State to provide support, create video content for the Legal Breakdown Video series, administer professional standards matters, and advise the association on legal matters, among others.
