September Sales Down, Prices Up, Homes Selling Quickly

September’s home prices were up 13.5 percent and sales decreased 23.8 percent according to the Housing Trends by the Iowa Association of REALTORS® (IAR).

3,377 homes sold in September 2022. In September 2021, 4,430 properties were sold. For the first nine months of 2022, Iowa has experienced a 11.7 percent decline in sales compared to the same period in 2021.

The median sales price for September 2022 was $225,000 compared to $198,208 in September of last year.

The number of homes available for sale continue to increase after record low numbers earlier this year. Our inventory of homes was 16.9 percent lower than in September 2021 with 7,825 homes on the market statewide.

Homes continue to sell quickly. September saw an average of 31 days on the market. That is almost identical to the 32 days on market in September of last year.

“We are seeing the typical seasonal slowdown in sales. The number of homes on the market remains lower than normal, and as the market continue to shift, experts project homes will begin to spend more days on the market and price growth will slow in the months ahead. With that said, right now there are many properties still selling within one month. Find a local Realtor to help be your guide through the entire process if you want to move before winter,” stated IAR President Byron Menke.
